Kinja'd!!!

A 1993 RX-7 FD3 TT with 67k on the odometer. And it's $10,800. And it looks minty.

There's the original listing. Too bad I don't have the cash.

Yeah but you gotta remember, despite the Japanese name, 60k on a Wankel is like 200k on a normal engine

Is the ratio really THAT bad?

Yeah, supposedly you have to rebuild the entire engine every few years.

The Renesis engine in the RX8 is supposed to be better, but it's still no Toyota piston engine.

It depends. Some folks maintain them to 150k with good upkeep. Others will have 3 different engines by that milestone... You kinda have to assume the worst when looking in the used market. As great of an engine as they are when they work, I tell myself to look at these as a shell for that cost.

That is a very nice looking FD. But 67k = engine rebuild time. Turbos and rotary engines are doomed to fail. If there was an FD RX7 with an NA motor that cranked over 200 hp and had rear seats...man that would be the shit.

I think it's more like 100k. That seems to be the shelf life of most 13b's.

Wow! Every few years! No wonder you can get the cars so cheap.

I knew the maintenance was bad but I didn't know it was THAT bad.

I see. It's all up to luck. Kind of like the early water cooled 911 and Boxsters. Whether or not the engines failed early was all up to luck. Some did and some didn't.

More or less.. Anal levels of attention help. But it's still not guaranteed then

I just checked and there are LS swap kits for RX-7s. The answer for any blown engine is always LS!

Oh yeah. That's a very common swap now. The purists will hate, but I would love an LS"7". The next big thing is "Coyote" 5.0 swaps now. That was all that was at Sema.

Purists are silly. I can see not modding a Ferrari 250 GTO. But an RX-7 whose original engine blew is a perfect candidate to mod!

I also think an LS swap in a Porsche 996 makes sense when the original engine blows. At least one guy has done it and I don't look down on him for making the car less German. I think it's awesome!

That makes sense that Coyote 5.0 swaps are becoming a thing now. I got to see that engine mounted on display at the LA Auto Show. It's a nice package. Good amount of displacement but not insanely big like the AMG 6.3 DOHC V8

We are in the same boat friend. A car is a tool of the owner. If someone wants to make a change, let em do it. Especially if we are talking about used cars with engineering flaws. If an owner can do it better, let em prove it. Yup, great motors. Strong, revs to the sky, and is completely bulletproof.

Exactly. If the original engine had flaws why not improve it? Or even if the original engine was great it might be at the end of the line and very expensive to rebuild. Why not replace it with something cheaper that puts out more power with less trouble?

I wonder how many people are retrofitting 1980s bimmers with American motors. You could buy a cheap 3 Series or 5 Series roller with a shot engine. It would be way cheaper to use an American motor than find a good BMW motor. It's not like BMW sells crate motors (I wish they would, then the E9X's V8 could live on...)

Exactly. But totally. Look online. There are several E30 and 39's out there with LS motors and newer BMW motors in them

I had seen them with BMW engine swaps, had be seen the LS swaps yet. How cool!

LS is always the answer :)
